No matter what genre I read, I subconsciously search for romance within every novel! What about you? It seems one-dimensional without it, right? Romance ought to be a priority in every book because we are creatures in need of affection.
Unrealistic romance plots can be very detrimental to a book. For example: a marriage where there are no arguments or simple disagreements. People within this kind of relationship, even a girlfriend or boyfriend would have to agree that when you spend an extended amount of time with another person, especially while living together, arguments are going to arise; Its a part of life as long as you able to work through it. She may not like the way he cooked the roast, but he thinks its perfect. He may be into poetry but she is more of a tomboy. She may not like where he placed his clothes.
In mentioning the wife or girlfriend being a tomboy, I touched on another issue with certain Romance based novels: stereo types!! The writers lack imagination and confine both genders to a "politically correct" box. Why should the man always have a macho complex? Why does the woman have to rely on the man to accomplish her goals? Switch it up! Rearrange the furniture to keep things interesting!
My novels will have complex plots that will keep you guessing. Relationships will have various dynamics. Characters will be fully developed and progressing naturally in course with the series or story. For instance, a male or female character may began as the immature, arrogant and obnoxious type that nobody wants around but develop into an honorable individual due the trials of life. On the other hand, this person can become worse over time and allow the hard knocks to birth bitterness and resentment in his or her heart. Everyone will have their own growth schedule or they will rot and become unrecognizable. This is art. Great art imitates life!
Picture being at your local Barnes 'n' Noble. You had a trying day at work and decided to stop by and calm your nerves as the traffic dies down. Being a science fiction reader, you naturally gravitate to that section. Running your eyes and fingers over the bindings of the books, you search for an author to tickle your fancy. Finally, you stop on a random title and pull the volume free from its lodgings. The cover immediately catches your eye. As you recline in a vacant chair and began to read, Choice romance is indicated in the first few pages. It wasn't graphic but potently evident!
As the characters are introduced, you notice their depth and realism; there were even a few that reminded you of a relative or close friend. The story progresses at a pleasant pace, back stories effectively shared and complex plots develops before your eyes. It was hard to put the book down. Without an ounce of joy, you peep at the time and reluctantly decide
to go home. Traffic had eased by now.
What to do about the book...you knew you had to read it until the end...
