Back stories increase value if properly executed

Hope you are having a wonderful day or evening. Had a lot to do today before doing any kind of writing. Have a family to attend to and they have to come first!
I took a sample of my novel before the revision process and submitted to a Facebook group for an honest critique. Gutsy right? Hey, I need to make sure my stories are up to standard.
The corrections were brutal. They didn't hold back in their process and told me of prevalent grammatical errors. That was expected but what stood out to me the most was one particular author asking why they should care about the main character. Savage. But, I don't blame her because I didn't add any supporting background. No one had a backstory as to how they came to be. Looking back, there was a big mistake in rushing, producing shallow characters.
Composing novels is supposed to be a work of art that must be done with care! The audience must be taken on a journey. Characters must be tangible! You must portray your world with such wonderful descriptions that your audience will despair of leaving it. When they want to escape, you're the person they should turn to. Just make sure that in midst of your details you don't forget your message. Stand for something.
